Shapley-ames Galaxies in the Blue and Infrared
The Shapley-Ames Catalog of 1276 galaxies with B < 12.5 is compared with the Sanders et al. all sky sample of the 629 galaxies with 60 μm flux density > 5.24 Jy. The fraction of Shapley-Ames galaxies that are visible in the IR is found to increase from 0.006 for E and E/S0 galaxies to 0.384 for Sc galaxies. The subset of Shapley-Ames galaxies that are detected in the IR has a median blue lumino...
متن کاملBarred Galaxies
Theoretical studies suggest that large-scale stellar bars can be highly effective in delivering gas to the central few hundred parsecs of a spiral galaxy, which may then initiate rapid star formation. Further instabilities may lead to additional inflow to physical scales relevant for active galactic nuclei. We test these predictions in light of recent observations. Compared to unbarred spirals,...
متن کاملNumerical simulations of interacting gas - rich barred galaxies . Vertical impact of small companions
We investigate the dynamical effects of an interaction between an initially barred galaxy and a small spherical companion using an N-body/SPH algorithm. In the models described here the small companion passes through the disc of the larger galaxy near-perpendicular to its plane. The impact positions and times are varied with respect to the phase of the bar and the dynamical evolution of the dis...
متن کاملObservations of Barred Galaxies
We review general observational properties of bars in galaxies, and relations between bars, their dynamics, and (circum)nuclear activity. We consider new measurements of bar fractions and of the distribution of bars with host type, bar strength, and bar pattern speeds. Bars redistribute material radially, leading to flattened abundance gradients and a diminished degree of disk-wide two-fold sym...
متن کاملDynamics of Barred Galaxies
Some 30% of disc galaxies have a pronounced central bar feature in the disc plane and many more have weaker features of a similar kind. Kinematic data indicate that the bar constitutes a major non-axisymmetric component of the mass distribution and that the bar pattern tumbles rapidly about the axis normal to the disc plane. The observed motions are consistent with material within the bar strea...
